Diving with Penguins
If you’re fed up with diving wall-to-wall whale sharks, how about trying something a little bit different? In a beautiful spot just on the edge of the British Riviera in Torbay, you will find Living Coasts. A charitable trust set up to support conservation projects in the UK and around the world. Recently introduced is the opportunity for qualified divers to interact with the penguins. African and Macaroni penguins. These are funny little fellows, full of character and incredibly inquisitive.

At Divemaster Scuba we joined Living Coasts for a once in a lifetime experience, exploring the underwater realm, that is their penguin pool and marveled as the African and Macaroni penguins glided through the water around us. This is the first time that this kind of encounter has been made available to the UK public. The experience started when we were met by our guide for the day, Derek, their dive supervisor. After a short briefing and a document check we were provided with all our equipment, then it was time to kit up and get ready to get wet. Once in the water we found ourselves in the company of some of natures most wonderful characters.
Once the dive was finished we enjoyed a well earned breakfast in the terrace café. After breakfast we had a guided tour of the attraction which was both informative and entertaining. The staff were simply brilliant, their care, love and dedication just shone through. The Living Coasts dive experience package includes admission and breakfast for the diver and one guest for the day of the experience. Although Living Coasts does not guarantee that the penguins will be in the water, they find that the birds are very curious about divers in the tank. In the unlikely event that there aren't any birds in the water during your dive, they will give you the chance to repeat the dive on another day or take part in the afternoon penguin feed, free of charge.
